About this data

Plotting the annual change rather than the level makes the mid-decade plateau visible. The 2023–24 slowdown coincided with subsidy withdrawals in several large European markets and a pause in US adoption, while China continued to pull the global average up.

Methodology & sources

Methodology

Share is EV sales as a percentage of total new car sales, on the IEA Global EV Outlook definition — battery-electric plus plug-in hybrid, light-duty passenger cars only. Commercial vehicles and two/three-wheelers are excluded, which matters because including them raises the headline number substantially in some markets. The year-on-year change series is the IEA’s own published percentage-point deltas, not a difference computed from the level series — the two are consistent but the deltas are the cited figure. CAVEAT: successive Global EV Outlook editions restate prior years as national reporting is revised. Values here are taken from the most recent edition that publishes each year. Re-verified 2026-08-10.
