Electric vehicles as a share of new car sales
Global EV share of new car sales, %, 2020 → 2025.
About this data
Global EV share went from roughly 4% of new car sales in 2020 to about 25% in 2025 — a sixfold rise in five years. The curve is not smooth: the fastest gains came in 2021 and 2022 (+4.9 and +5.7 points), growth then slowed to about +3 points a year in 2023–24, before re-accelerating to +4 points in 2025.

Methodology & sources
Last updated: Aug 14, 2026Methodology
Share is EV sales as a percentage of total new car sales, on the IEA Global EV Outlook definition — battery-electric plus plug-in hybrid, light-duty passenger cars only. Commercial vehicles and two/three-wheelers are excluded, which matters because including them raises the headline number substantially in some markets. The year-on-year change series is the IEA’s own published percentage-point deltas, not a difference computed from the level series — the two are consistent but the deltas are the cited figure. CAVEAT: successive Global EV Outlook editions restate prior years as national reporting is revised. Values here are taken from the most recent edition that publishes each year.
